Keyword Search

Google infers an "and" between keywords not in quotation marks and returns pages found with all the keywords. e.g translocation water diameter xylem

Phrase search

Surround your phrase in quotation marks to search for the exact phrase. e.g "translocation in xylem"

Boolean Keyword Search

Refine a keyword search using boolean operators.

Symbol Meaning Action
+ AND Finds only documents containing all of the specific words or phrases. For example, "water + xylem"finds documents with both the word "water" and the word "xylem".
OR OR Finds documents containing at least one of the specified words or phrases. For example, "water OR xylem"finds documents containing either "water" or "xylem". The found documents could contain both, but do not have to.
- AND NOT Excludes documents containing the specific word or phrase. For example, "water - xylem" finds documents containing "water" but not containing "xylem". As with the + and OR operators, - must appear between two terms.
[ ] Grouping Used to group portions of boolean queries together for more complicated queries. For example, "water + [xylem OR potential] - cnidarians" finds documents containing "water" and either "xylem" or "potential" but not "cnidarians".
