Laboratory Safety Regulations
- Footwear - Students should note that, for reasons of safety,
bare feet, open sandals or thongs are not permitted in the laboratory.
- Eating and Drinking in the laboratory is not permitted.
Students attending 3 hour practical sessions are encouraged to take a 15
minute break.
- Long Hair must be tied back during laboratory
sessions.
- Fire Rules make yourself familiar with the fire safety
and evacuation procedures. Read the fire rules in the laboratory.
- Practical Material is not to be removed
from the laboratory.
- Handwashing must only be done at the sinks on the side
benches (where there is potable water).
Notice Regarding Cuts, Needlesticks and Other Injuries
Students attending practical classes in first year biology are advised to
have a current tetanus immunisation as a precautionary measure.
Rules of the Laboratory
Personal Safety
- No eating, drinking or smoking.
- Shoes must be worn at all times - sandals or thongs are not permitted.
- Hair must be tied back when bunsen burners are in use.
Cleaning Up
- Glassware must be rinsed after use and returned to the end of the bench
or the side bench as instructed.
- Dissecting trays must be rinsed and placed beside the rear sinks.
- Follow instructions carefully for disposal of hazardous materials.
- Benches must be wiped clean of spills using paper towels.
- Rubbish must be disposed of into bins.
Microscopes & Slides
- Microscopes must be returned to the cupboard clean and dry, with the 4x
objective in place and slide removed.
- Prepared slides must be returned to the appropriate tray.
- Slides used for fresh mounts must be put into the "Dirty Slides" container
after removing the coverslip and disposing of it into the sharps box.
Flammable Liquids
- Do not swab the bench with alcohol near a naked flame.
- Red hot instruments must not be plunged into alcohol.
- Do not use naked flames in or near the labs when highly flammable organic
solvents are present.
