Specific Course Content: Lecturers

If you have specific questions about lecture material, you should contact the staff member who gave the lecture.  The names of the lecturers are printed in the timetable at the front of this manual.  All academic staff members are required by the University to be available for student consultation.  Some staff will have advertised consultation hours when you can visit them to discuss problems with the course content, either on your own or in a group.  In most cases, lecturers will prefer that you email them with questions or to make an appointment to see them.  Email contacts and directions for emailing staff are given below.
The Heydon-Laurence, Old Geology and Macleay buildings are on Science Road.   It is advisable to email the staff member first to make an appointment and so we can give directions, since the layout of rooms in the buildings can be very confusing.

During certain weeks of the semester, first year biology staff will be available for consultation in the Carslaw Building.  There will be a notice outside the Biology Lizard Lounge (Rm 507) (to the right of the door) and on WebCT to indicate when consultations are available.

PRACTICAL CLASSES

Each student will attend one three-hour practical class each week (see your personal timetable for your allocated class time).  In your practical classes you will mostly be working with small groups of other students.  We hope to provide a friendly atmosphere where you can get to know others in the group as well as the staff, whose job it is to help you develop suitable strategies for learning.
The staff in practical classes are there to facilitate your learning.  It is their job to encourage and help you to develop the skills we have indicated.  Your interactions with staff will be maximised if you prepare effectively for each practical class by reading through the notes beforehand and doing the independent study exercises.
